It was a big idea. A new idea. Something no one had done before. Vince believed so strongly in this idea, he mortgaged his farm, completely sure this could happen. He approached Jim Henson and Children's Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop) with the concept of bringing the beloved Sesame Street Muppets to the live stage for the enjoyment of families around the world. The first Sesame Street Live show opened in September 1980 at the Metropolitan Sports Center in Bloomington, Minnesota. That Christmas, the show went on to play for four weeks at Madison Square Garden in New York City before an enthusiastic audience of some 100,000 people. The New York engagement was something of a coming out party — it clearly established that this show, and the new concept it introduced, would have a powerful effect on the family entertainment industry. Since its inaugural season in 1980, VEE Corporation has toured over 30 countries around the globe, and entertained millions of children and families. Despite the success and growth of VEE Corporation, Egan continues to live on a 100-acre farm outside of Minneapolis. He draws inspiration from the land, the sky and all that space and comes to work everyday refreshed and ready to tackle the next opportunity. When he isn't talking about how lucky he's been to have his life's work be that of entertaining families, Vince likes to talk about flying — he's also an aircraft aficionado. |
